Inform Women, Transform Lives Campaign

Information has the power to transform lives. The fundamental right of access to information is critical for both governments and the people they serve, particularly women. It allows women to access public services, exercise their rights, make their voices heard, and make better decisions for themselves, their families, and their communities. Yet for many women, the power of information remains unreachable. Without access to information, women are excluded from economic opportunities, denied dignity and autonomy, and cut off from essential services.

How Does the Campaign Make a Difference?

The Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, based at The Carter Center, is an innovative global initiative aimed at empowering women by increasing their access to information and essential municipal services. The campaign supports local governments to effectively reach women with essential municipal services, using information as a bridge. Since launching in 2021, the campaign has partnered with 35 cities around the world.

Women in Guatemala share information with their communities.

Women in Bangladesh consider the value of information.

Elements of the Campaign

Through the campaign, The Carter Center supports cities to identify existing services that cities believe are transformative but underutilized by women in their communities because of a lack of awareness and information. Participating cities receive technical assistance and financial support to implement an integrated and innovative communications strategy. Moreover, cities are provided important opportunities for collaboration across public, private, and civil society sectors; peer-to-peer learning; and scalable solutions to overcoming the challenges that women face in accessing information and services. City efforts are complemented by small grants to local community-based organization, a mural or arts project depicting the value of information for women, and more.

City Spotlights

Through the campaign, Guatemala City chose to highlight the Municipal Women’s Centers, which provide psychological care, legal advice, and medical and nutritional services for women. Guatemala City used television, radio, billboards, and promotional materials to share information about the Centers.  Impacts were impressive, including a 200% increase in the provision of free health services.
